2 What do you intend your work to convey to an audience?
Sense of meaning, existentialism. Aesthetics. Precision.
3 Why do you work in your chosen medium and format?
Enjoy paint. Juxtaposition of traditional, painstakingly slow medium, with contemporary, frenetically fast, disposable subject matter.
4 Technically speaking how do you go about constructing your work, that is the image or object itself? What devices do you employ?
Newspapers. Clippings, juxtapose on studio wall, select subject for painting, e.g obituary. Choose scale, usually same size, illusionistic trompe l'oile reference. Occasionally enlarge with projector. Choose medium. Usually paint ,oil on linen, hand made canvas. Occasionally drawing or etching. Any 'editorial' decisions... eg. Change of text, or aspect of image. Have freedom to change and distort anything as seems appropriate. Render as accurately as possible. Sometimes make work specifically for a particular exhibition.
5 Which period(s)/artists/specific works of art are you influenced by and how directly? How does this manifest in your work?
Dutch 17th C. Esp Vermeer, still life. Warhol, eg. renderings of newspapers, disaster series...G.Richter:slick painting technique.
6 What stimulates/informs your work from the world around you?
News, newspapers. Current affairs, who's died? Particular interest in cloning/genetic engineering and terrorism (birth & death).
Other contemporary art shows.
7 What stimulates/informs your work from your own personal experience?
Death of my father triggered interest in still life/obituaries. Teaching at BA/MA level keeps me stimulated, thinking about art and what I'm doing. Ongoing research...
8 From where do you derive your other visual source material (i.e. non art historical) and how do you implement this material within your work?
See 4. A lot of film/photography references. Use computer/internet for research ,etc.
9 What are the main problems that you face in making your work?
Technical problems, painting technique. Keeping the whole thing going. Time management, earning enough money to live, rent studio, etc. Also time teaching, curating shows, organising, etc...
10 Where do you intend to take your work from here?
Have 4 shows simultaneously this Oct...Also articles to be published, eg 'Independent' Show to curate....has momentum. Need better gallery representation. More sales...the work takes care of itself, has its own momentum, just have to try and keep up with it. The 'news' and obituaries are endless......!
